Winters has conducted preliminary surveys on the survival of ponderosa pine seedlings planted in the ground. She found that survival rates were not significantly different between the cutting treatments.

Cutting treatments were evaluated on six subplots. Each plot contained 100 ponderosa pine seedlings. The seeds were broadcast-seeded by hand at a rate of 158 grams per subplot. This equates to 4,500 seeds per subplot.
